Alfons X, also known as Alfonso X the Wise, was a King of Castile and León in Spain who reigned from 1252 to 1284. He was born on November 23, 1221, in Toledo, Spain, and was the eldest son of King Fernando III. Alfons X was a patron of the arts and sciences, and he is often credited with laying the foundations for modern Spanish literature by promoting the use of the Castilian language in literature. He sponsored translations of works from Arabic and Latin into Castilian, helping to preserve knowledge in astronomy, medicine, and law. He also had an interest in music, and he is known for commissioning the creation of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of over 400 songs in praise of the Virgin Mary. Alfons X died on April 4, 1284, in Seville, Spain, and was succeeded by his son Sancho IV.
